So here’s the real story about post-baby bodies:
Don’t ditch those maternity clothes just yet (although read on for a great tip of where to donate those when you’re ready!). You’ll likely be in maternity clothes for at least a few more weeks while you’re recovering. I know you’re probably sick of them and sooooo ready to get back into your pre-baby clothes, but repeat after me when you’re frustrated with baby weight: nine months on, nine months off!
So while you should hang on to those maternity clothes you’ve worn over and over and over… now it’s time to add some nursing tops to your wardrobe! Especially if you’re shopping online, you’ll find tons of options of clothes that are adorable and nursing-friendly.
For a sweet newborn photo session in your home, I suggest comfy pants, like stretch jeans or leggings, and a flowy top. Here’s a sophisticated option I pulled together for less than $150!
Why I love this outfit for a newborn photo session
Whether you’re recovering from labor or a c-section, comfort is key! Leggings like these are a great choice because they feel a lot like pajamas, while giving you a little structure to help those tired tummy muscles that supported baby for nine months.
A loose-fitting top with buttons is flattering and you’ll have no trouble nursing when baby gets hungry. The pattern is delicate and won’t distract from baby, and the collar makes this top a little nicer than a regular nursing t-shirt.
I didn’t wear heels much while pregnant, even though I lived in them before kids. It took some time for my feet to readjust to heels after wearing flats for years while I was pregnant and chasing toddlers. Booties like the pair featured above are a great in-between if you aren’t quite ready for heels again yet.

How to pair this outfit with something for your husband
I suggest nice dark jeans for dads and a neutral shirt that is free of patterns and logos. A button-down shirt is great, or a henley works too. Make sure he leaves the sandals, Crocs and tennis shoes in the closet! They’ll stick out like a sore thumb in your photos.
About donating those maternity clothes…
When you’re back in your pre-baby clothing and done with the maternity stuff, consider donating it to a local pregnancy medical clinic like PACN, if you’re in the north Houston area. PACN offers practical resources and assistance to moms and families who need it while pregnant and up to a year after baby’s birth. PACN mamas can borrow maternity clothing any time and swap out items as needed, which is great because we all know how expensive maternity clothes can be!
They’ll take gently loved clothing (tops, bottoms, nursing bras, dresses, skirts – even maternity swim suits!) in great condition (if you’d share it with your best friend, consider it good to donate!).
