One of my favorite questions for couples after their maternity photo sessions is to ask what their favorite images are. I’m always thinking about that during a session. After I snap a round of images and I’m scanning through them on my camera, I always wonder, Will this one be her favorite? Or this one? Naturally there are always a few that I love the most, and it’s fun to see if the mama-to-be and I are on the same page.
Mamas tend to favor photos where they look their absolute best, and I usually fall in love with striking images that illustrate the story I wanted to tell in that moment. Typically our favorites overlap on at least a few images, but sometimes clients have reasons for falling in love with a particular photo that are unique to them. For instance, some mamas-to-be favor one photo over another because their husbands are smiling at them in a tender, familiar way. You know the way your husband smiles at you over a private joke that only you two share? Those are typically the pictures clients love.
(Of course, when it comes to newborn images, hands down, mamas pick the best photos of their babies and I can almost always predict those favorites!)
Sometimes when I deliver a gallery of images, I include color and black-and-white versions of every photo. Other times, I send a mix of the two. Roxanna’s session was definitely one of those where I loved letting the black-and-white photos stand on their own, without all of the the color counterparts.
If you’ve ever wondered why photographers choose to convert some images to black-and-white, there are a couple of reasons. Sometimes a photo makes more of an impact in black-and-white. Other times, I remove the color because there is something about it that distracts from the overall photo.
Today I’m sharing Roxanna’s favorite photos from winter maternity session in The Woodlands, TX, which is a pretty equal mix of color and black-and-whites. (You can take a peek at my favorites in her blog post here – including the short film of her session!)
She definitely favored photos that included daddy-to-be Edgar, too. I just love that her daughter will get a glimpse into who Roxanna and Edgar are in 2018, just weeks before Emma’s arrival. Whenever I look at photos of my husband and I before we had kids, it’s amazing how young and rested we look! I’m willing to bet that is the case for practically every set of parents in the world.
There was so much about this photo session to love: the purple of her gown, the way she and Edgar just fit together so well, how you can’t tell they were freezing to death in 30 degree, windy weather…
Speaking of Edgar, he kept his dad-to-be look perfectly neutral so that Roxanna could shine. His dark jeans and boots were the perfect choice for her photo session.
I had a couple favorite images of these two that didn’t make the blog, including shots of Roxanna in her hat and these two cuddled together in their coats, warming up in between shots. Those “in-between” photos always bring a smile to my face and I love capturing sweet moments when couples don’t know I’m taking photos.
Here are a few of Roxanna’s favorite photos!
