If you’re a first-time mama thinking about a Fresh 48 session, here are a few things you might not know:
01. After you give birth, it will still be a while before you’re back in your pre-pregnancy clothes (this is true for most, but not all, mamas). In fact, when you leave the hospital or birth center, you’ll probably still look five-six months pregnant.
02. Focus on comfort above all else while you’re at the hospital. It doesn’t matter if you deliver baby or have a c-section, you’re likely to be tired. I advise my new mama friends to pack yoga pants for hospital photo sessions (black is best, trust me on this one!) and pajama pants for the rest of the time.
03. Nursing tops look great and make it easy to breastfeed. You can pair a neutral or earth-toned top with a light cardigan, which will keep you warm since hospitals are often chilly, and they can provide a little extra coverage while nursing.
Why I love this combination:
For your Fresh 48 session, you want to select clothing that will flatter you and baby. Earth tones are the perfect choice for both of you because these shades don’t cause color cast on baby. Think about a bright pink or red top – sometimes you can see that color reflected onto baby’s delicate skin. This is why soft, natural colors are the best choice to flatter both of you – think white, cream, gray, navy, brown and black.
A black shirt paired with black pants will probably help you feel a little less self-conscious of everything that happens with your post-baby body. The buttons on the sleeves of this cardigan add a little classiness. I have one almost identical to the cardigan pictured above and I wore it after having all three of my girls. The sleeve length was just enough to keep me warm.
Old Navy maternity yoga pants are literally a Godsend while pregnant, but you might want to pack a regular pair for after baby. I didn’t have a c-section with my daughters, so I can’t speak to the comfort level of yoga pants in that circumstance… but the little bit of stretch helped support my very tired stomach muscles after birth.
To accessorize or not after baby?
I wore my regular jewelry after having my girls, but this is really your own personal preference. Some new mamas are all fixed up with hair and makeup + accessories for the Fresh 48 sessions. Others go with a natural look and let that new mama glow shine!
What to avoid:
Leave any loud patterns or items with logos packed away for your photo session. These items take attention away from you and baby, and they can also date your photos. Soft floral cardigans/light wraps photograph beautifully and add a little pop of color.
